Season guide — when to visit Mallorca

May Worth a visit

May is a favourite for many visitors.

April and October receive particularly strong recommendations in the season guide. The best time for you also depends on whether you want to swim, walk or explore towns and villages. In July and August, look at the individual place guides for advice on heat and crowds. January, February and December are quieter in many resorts, with some tourist businesses closed for the season.

Beautiful places to visit in Mallorca

Ten places I like to show anyone visiting for the first time, from the city to a quiet cove. This is not a ranking: each place guide explains which months suit a visit.

Palma This is no oversized village passing as an island capital. Palma is a Mediterranean city with more than a thousand years of history, home to almost half of Mallorca's population. Distinctive neighbourhoods, a major Gothic cathedral and a Moorish street plan you can still get lost in. Explore this place → Alcúdia Mallorca’s best-preserved medieval town walls enclose lanes of honey-coloured sandstone, while the Roman remains of Pollentia lie just outside. The old town is car-free, and twice a week it hosts one of the island’s largest markets. Explore this place → Sóller An orange-growing town in a mountain-ringed valley, once easier to reach by sea than overland. Citrus trading brought wealth, French-influenced houses and a narrow-gauge railway opened in 1912 that still runs today. Explore this place → Cala Figuera A fishing village around a narrow, forked inlet, with boathouses and slipways tucked against its rocky sides. Come for a working harbour and a waterfront walk, rather than a sandy beach. Explore this place → Pollença A small town at the northern end of the Tramuntana, set inland because the sea brought pirates for centuries. Climb 365 cypress-lined steps to the Calvari, browse the Sunday market on Plaça Major or watch the whole town re-enact a battle in August. Explore this place → Platja de Muro A long sandy stretch of the Bay of Alcúdia, with protected dunes and pines at Es Comú rather than a continuous hotel frontage. S'Albufera lies behind it, while near Can Picafort around 140 little holiday houses stand among sandy lanes. Explore this place → Port d'Alcúdia Five kilometres of pale sand shelving gently into the sea, backed by hotels, bars and shops. A classic beach holiday on Alcúdia bay, with a medieval walled town just two kilometres inland. Explore this place → Cala d'Or A resort planned in the 1930s by an Ibizan who brought the style of his home island with him. Low white buildings surround turquoise coves and a marina, giving Cala d'Or a distinctive look. Explore this place → Cala Llombards Pale sand between high rocky sides, clear water and boathouses built into the shore. Cala Llombards is no secret, but outside the busiest weeks it still makes a lovely place to spend time by the sea. Explore this place → Platja des Carbó A strip of white sand between Colònia de Sant Jordi and Mallorca's southern tip, reached on foot or by boat. The water is clear enough to see the seabed a long way out — a good reason for the walk. Explore this place →

Why Mallorca Fritz

Four ways to find the right place for you

Mallorca Fritz helps you choose places that suit your holiday, decide when to visit and find nearby stops to combine in a day. Each of the 171 place guides draws on my own visits.

Beyond the best-known places. The right ones for you.

Every place has its own guide and an honest assessment: what can you expect, who will enjoy it and who might prefer somewhere else? A beautiful place is not necessarily the right one for your holiday.

Choose your moment. Find the right time to go.

A place can feel completely different in August, April or November. Every month is considered separately: how busy is it, what is open and when is a visit most worthwhile? That helps you decide when to go as well as where.

A day out that works

Which places are genuinely close, and what can you sensibly combine in a day? The guides suggest neighbouring places and days out. Where a driving time is available, it is shown; other distances are marked as straight-line distances. Allow more time for the actual journey, especially in the mountains.

Personally visited. Independently recommended.

The place guides combine my own impressions and photographs with practical information. No town, hotel or restaurant pays to be included or recommended. The English edition has no advertising offers or affiliate links.
