Getting to know Torre des Verger
A round 16th-century watchtower on a rocky outcrop above the west coast, beside the Ma-10 between Estellencs and Banyalbufar, within Banyalbufar’s municipality.
It has two names: Torre des Verger, after the estate, and the popular Torre de ses Ànimes, or Tower of Souls.
Why it was built here
Corsairs raided Banyalbufar in 1542 and 1546. In 1579, the island’s governing assembly, the Gran i General Consell, agreed to build a tower in the district. A shortage of money delayed the work, and the tower is first documented in 1597.
It was solely a lookout and signal tower, never equipped with cannon. Its job was to report approaching sails, receiving signals from Torre de na Pòpia on Sa Dragonera and passing them to the Valldemossa tower. News could travel along the coast in hours rather than days.
The long view wasn’t a bonus; it was the reason for the building.

What to look for
The tower has a round plan and thick rubble-stone walls. Above the entrance are remains of a machicolation, a projecting structure from which defenders could act directly downwards, as well as arrow slits.
It is a protected heritage building and the best-known, most-visited of Mallorca’s coastal watchtowers.

Climbing to the roof
A narrow outside staircase leads up. There is no continuous handrail, so stay below in wind or with small children.
Entry is free, and the walk from the road takes only a few minutes.
Practical details
The parking strip beside the Ma-10 is small and fills quickly. Stopping next to it is dangerous; carry on and try again later if there is no space.
Allow twenty minutes.
When to come
January for the clearest air, or March and October for a comfortable visit. The afternoon light is particularly good.
In high summer, haze limits the distant views and the parking strip is full by midday.
