A village along the way
Santa Eugènia lies in the Pla de Mallorca, on the western edge of the plain, halfway between Palma and Inca. Despite being so close to the capital, it attracts few visitors. Around 1,700 people live here, in a village with a stone-built centre and a square with a well and trees.
It stands on a slope. For the view across the plain, you need to walk to the upper edge of the village — you cannot see it from the main street.
What to look for
The hillside parish church has a tower that serves as the village’s landmark from the plain. Elsewhere, look for old courtyard gates, with courtyards hidden behind them, and manor-house doorways with carefully carved stone surrounds. There is even a well standing in the middle of the street, with the road running around it.
Much of the stonework has been left exposed. That sets Santa Eugènia apart from villages whose houses have been whitewashed over the years.

For cyclists
The roads on the edge of the Pla are rolling rather than flat, quiet and lined with almond groves and vineyards. Santa Eugènia is well placed between Palma, Santa Maria del Camí and Binissalem.

When to turn off
March and October are good months. In February, almond trees blossom on the plain below. July and August are too hot inland, and hardly anyone is out at midday.
The village will not fill a day — allow forty minutes, then continue. Combine it with Santa Maria del Camí or Binissalem, both less than 15 minutes away and both with wineries.
